Inhaled Marijuana May Keep Brain Cancer in Remission

3/16/2011 – A recent medical case-report highlights a striking association between inhaled Cannabis and anti-tumor effects in young adults with brain cancer. This gives scientists new evidence that the chemical compounds from the Cannabis plant (known as cannabinoids) may have significant anti-cancer effects in humans.

Mansoor Foroughi PhD is the lead author of a new paper that suggests the possibility of Cannabis inhalation in the spontaneous regression of gliomas. The MRI images provided in his study demonstrate that the tumors of two patients (11 and 13 years old) did not increase in size after treatment, constituting a state of remission. (To be in remission, a tumor simply must not increase in size.)

The 13 year-old patient showed up at the hospital suffering from increasing headaches, nausea, and vomiting. She had prolonged memory problems and began to deteriorate rapidly. An emergency MRI scan revealed a tumor mass in her brain. She underwent a craniotomy and most of the tumor mass was removed. Her doctors then followed the remaining tumor mass closely with subsequent MRI scans.

The authors note that this patient volunteered that she began smoking cannabis at age 14, after her diagnosis, and continued almost daily from age 16 up to 19 years of age. As they scanned her brain over time, the tumor mass became smaller with each checkup. According to the study, the tumor in the teenager had almost completely disappeared six years after the operation.

The paper states, “The regular use of Cannabis coincided with the time course of radiological tumor regression.”  This patient received no further medication or medical treatment. The biggest variable in her remission seemed to beCannabis Inhalation.

This was not a completely unique case. The 11 year-old patient in the same report arrived at the hospital with a history of headaches that gradually became worse and ultimately lead to nausea, vomiting and confusion. An MRI revealed a tumor mass and she underwent a craniotomy. A small remnant of the cancer was left behind, later confirmed by a follow up MRI. Over the next three years, the tumor would demonstrate the features of regression. Then, around the time the patient was 14, the tumor began to regress. Finally, six years post-surgery, the tumor remnant had nearly disappeared.

The authors write, “The only significant feature in the history was the consumption of Cannabis via inhalation, on average three times a week. This occurred in the last 3 years of follow up, namely between the ages of 14 and 17, and coincided with the time course of the regression of the residual tumor.”

Foroughi and his team suggest there may be plant synergy and recommend studying the whole Cannabis plant, “since any beneficial effect may not be caused by one compound, molecule, or cannabinoid alone.” This theory is supported by previous research;  published evidence shows that cannabinoids have an enhanced anti-tumor activity when they are applied in combination.

The report concludes that “more research may be appropriate to investigate the therapeutic use of these substances” and goes on to say, “Such research will be difficult to achieve because Cannabis is illegal in many jurisdictions.”

There has never been a clinical trial studying the anti-cancer effects of smoked marijuana. However, there has been one clinical trial with pure Delta9-THC and brain cancer. Several patients in Spain were admitted to a study focused on the issue of safety of using cannabinoids in the clinic. The patients were administered Delta-9 THC by direct injection into the site of the tumor. A slight reduction in cancer proliferation was reported but the treatment did not cure any of the patients.

The authors write, “Cannabinoid delivery was safe and could be achieved without overt psychoactive effects.

Since this was a pilot trial on the safety of injected THC, the most important point is that none of the patients died during the study and no serious adverse effects were reported. A review of the evidence can be read here and a follow-up study is being conducted in Spain.

Can marijuana contribute to the regression or remission of certain cancers? Given the slow progress of clinical trials for whole plant Cannabis, it can be frustrating waiting for years, even decades, trying to answer these vital questions. But for the two young women with brain cancer in Dr. Foroughi’s report, a shift to a cannabis lifestyle may have made a difference.

Jahan Marcu is currently investigating the pharmacology of cannabinoid receptors. He was working at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute when exciting discoveries were made showing enhanced anti-cancer effects with THC and CBD from the Cannabis plant. The findings were published in the Journal of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. In 2009 he received the Billy Martin Award from the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS). Jahan is currently the vice-chair the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board at Americans for Safe Access (ASA).   Contact:  science { at } freedomisgreen.com

This shows that the dangerous philosophies of “radical pragmatism”, shared by both Marxists and Nazis, are well and alive in contemporary America! We need to overcome the whole government “Cabal” and its anti-cannabis dogma that is becoming more stupid and vicious by the day! The extremists currently in charge of the DEA will stop at nothing to derail the medicinal cannabis program and the Will of Voters who voted for it. I wish I could see the day when the senseless and shameful witch-hunts against citizens over a natural medicinal plant cannabis finally end, and they will! I predicted a long time ago that anti-cannabis repression will lead to increased hard drug and alcohol abuse because they are not “easily” detected in random drug screens, especially when it comes to the “window” of their detection. All these so-called “random drug screens” unfairly target the users of the safest substance of them all – cannabis! I can’t wait to see the day when these shameful and senseless witch-hunts against citizens in connection with cannabis medicinal plant will stop altogether. I stressed many times already that no system, no matter of how repressive, can survive on a series of “un-realities”. Current undisguised assault by the “radical pragmatists” from the DEA on the will of the people of Montana (and now also Hollywood) demonstrate their delusional thinking their attempts in suppression science (and people’s will) will be more successful than those of Inquisition, Gestapo, or KGB! I wish I could live to see these people’s miserable and disgraceful failure! Everything that the DEA and its allies use to intimidate citizens (and politicians) about the remarkable cannabis plant is based on unreality: cannabis is NOT physically addictive, the so-called “gateway drug theory” is NOT scientifically valid, smoking cannabis does NOT lead to increase in the risk of lung cancer, legalization in other countries did NOT lead to increased cannabis use, and in addition it is proven that cannabis use suppresses violent behavior. Cannabis is immeasurably safer than alcohol, (and most currently used prescription drugs – do we even notice their devastating potential side effects at their TV commercials?), and be so ignorant as to say that cannabis plant does not have medicinal value is to be out of touch with “reality” altogether. Legalization of medicinal cannabis is non-partisan because all of us can get sick and be able to take advantage of its remarkable medicinal properties. Let’s reject the prohibitionist fear-tactics as they have no substance to them, and legalize cannabis in all 50 States without further delay!

After years of personal research I have come across several articles that suggest anti-tumor properties in regular use of Marijuana. Wouldnt it be sad to find out this whole time that the cure or at least an alternitive for prolonged life over cancer, was found in Marijuana.

“Anti-tumor properties” can people not grasp the possibilities of what this means? I think the first time I read about “anti-tumor properties” in marijuana was about 3 years ago.

Thank you normal for your fight against these terroristic crimes. By that I mean the scare tactics the government has used to control the population. “Johnny killed his whole family after smoking Marihuana.”
Although the first fights were for personal and recreational use, its getting closer based on your fight for medicinal use.

    Thank you and thank you.

Yes this is very amazing stuff. And like curtis here said, wouldnt it be a real kick in the ass if so many people have died a slow and very, very painful death with almost no type of relief from cancer just to find out it can be cured, controlled, or at least made tolerable BY A SIMPLE PLANT WITH ALMOST NO PREPARATION, NO ADDED INGREDIENTS, AND NO ADVERT AFFECTS! And to second all of this the people fighting for , or even just self medicating illnesses, are being bullied, threatened, and eventually raped of their civil liberties! Once again i stand with curtis on this. Americans need to unite and stand up for ourselves. Because we have the right to be happy and make our own responsible decisions. And we dont need a government that acts more wrongly to its own citizens than the so called terrorists we’re been hunting without remorse for how many years now??? Open your eyes people. Its time for change. And piece Obama sure aint gonna give it to ya.

Marijuana is like democracy, more they try to stomp all over it and destroy it, more and more it spreads everywhere, taking over hearts and minds. Marijuana is a human race friend, and we going to protect our friend dearly and stoicaly

Im no doctor but this is amazing stuff but our government knows about this im sure but they wont legalize this until they find a way to tax it.I always said marijuana was a cure all. Its so sad these sick people could have a better quality of life just by smoking a joint. But until the elected assholes oh I mean officials make it legal there will be more and more suffering. Its a shame.

We know that they know it….the thing though is…that they ll never admit it……for several reasons….here are the two most important reasons..
    1) the Pharmaceutical companies will never allow that……just because they make billions of dollars from chemo’s and chemo drugs…..imagine that each person that makes the chemo therapy will cost him/her about 4.000 $ per MONTH!!!!!!and replace that with 50 dollars that costs to grow some plants inside your house??forget it!!!! oh..dont forget that those wangers and the banks rule each nation….thats a fact!!!!

Also, let’s look at something else… Although this is off topic, it sure is fun to educate yourselves.

So, we have Tobacco, right? Many native-americans use tobacco everyday, yet have no health risks and seem to live to be over 100. Well, since the year 2000, we have discovered oh so many things, like for instance, tobacco companies use Radioactive Fertilizer (Radioactive meaning in the long run, Cancerous), not to mention, the additives they put in the cigarettes like Rat Poison & Ammonia among many others…

So you look at this example for a minute, why can’t tobacco companies simply switch to non-toxic organic fertilizer, and stop using the additives… Just use plain, naturally grown tobacco in cigarettes.
This will stop the cause of cancer from smoking, this will saves peoples lives…

Now, back on topic. Marijuana cures cancer, and that includes lung cancer, so even if the above was to not happen, we can still cure ourselves.

Why is it we have people dying everyday, because of cancer, or alcoholism, or overdosing due to prescription pills, or these new and unstable “legal” alternative drugs to the “illegal” drugs like Marijuana, Cocaine, Meth and even Heroin. They can’t stop people from using a drug, because people will always end up coming out with a newer drug, that is far worse and dangerous, than the illegal drugs themselves.

Despite all the knowledge we gain by scientific study there is one large group of people that stand in the way . It is the hardcore religious sect that denies the fact science gives us, they shun any type of education on what is real calling it sin. until you can convert these freaks who sadly control most of the monies that fund the politicians it will never happen. Then you have big Paper, cotton, and lets not forget about Oil and Pharmaceuticals( the pharmaceutical companies don’t make money off healthy folks), AND TOBACCO all of these powerhouses will be massively hurt with the legalization Of Cannabis. The rich want to stay rich they want you to stay poor and in jails that also generate private business profits. BUT I pray for the day when the world opens Its eyes. i hope its in my lifetime though i doubt it.
